A very dead mall down in Statesville, Signal Hill was opened August 1, 1973 and it's an open question how much longer it'll survive.
With 350,000 square feet of space, the building is somewhat in the middle in mall sizes.
At opening, it had 3 anchor tenants: F.W. Woolworth, Belk, and Spainhour's, along with 42 other inline tenant spaces occupied at the peak.
Now Belk is the only anchor, and at last record, only 3 other tenants remain.
At some point the Woolworth and Spainhour's closed, and were replaced by JC Penney (above, closed) and Peebles (below, closed).
Looks like this IHOP is closed, too, though fairly recently.
A pandemic casualty?
The "Community Police Center East", which is now staffed by an assortment of random junk.
In the parking lot, what was probably a grocery store.
I could find no info whatsoever on this.
And in the neighboring shopping center's back lot, a very woebegone New Towne Theatre and adjoining El Tio's.
From gathered info, these may have been abandoned since the late 90's. Judging by the condition, I'd believe that. I'd love to go in these, especially the theatre.
Signal Hill is still open to the public, both the Belk and the interior concourse, so I hope to head back this winter to check out the interior.
Thanks for looking!
What a shame probably was a very nice place back in the day
