These trucks were used to push trucks over Donner pass in the snow. It is powered by a VT-903 Cummins, backed by a 5 speed Spicer. The large air tank is for the air starter. I shortened the cab to 72”
I've heard that Donner is brutal in the winter, so I wonder if other companies had similar rigs, there or elsewhere?
The chrome ring on the steer wheels - I've noticed similar things on other cabovers, and I've always assumed they served as an extra step to enter the cab... But that's a guess.
Roadway also had at least one of these trucks along with other companies. It is my understanding that they would push any truck though. The rings were on the reference trucks so I put them on here. I know that they use something similar in truck racing to protect the studs and nuts. I suppose that that may also be a purpose as well.
Very interesting and unique model.
